The Joy of Duke

"I caught this one before I was a published photographer. When the Duke Ellington Orchestra was signed to headline the cozy show lounge at Harrah's Club for two weeks, I caught every act. At the time, I was practicing how to be a photographer, taking my cameras to show after show. On this night, before an especially joyous crowd who had just witnessed a dazzling display of saxophone solos from mainstays Johnny Hodges, Harry Carney and Paul Gonsalves, I captured The Duke in this exuberant moment, just as excited as everyone else in the room. These are the moments that drove me further into a career as a jazz photographer."
