Roadmap + Access

Where the archive stands now – and how you can access it.

Archiving & Digitization Complete — All 80,000 negatives are cataloged and rehoused in archival storage. All negatives have been scanned at high resolution to complete digitization.

Metadata Enrichment — In progress now, Veryl Oakland is reviewing and enhancing all lot-level data, which will be added to the database to improve search quality.

Platform & Public Access — We are currently evaluating Digital Asset Management (DAM) systems to house the archive and make it publicly accessible. The goal: a searchable, low-resolution browsable collection filtered by year, musician, venue, and event. This will allow researchers, collectors, and the public to discover images and request licensing.

Selective Retouching — We’ll professionally retouch all higher-quality images to ensure the best possible public-facing presentation. Heavily damaged images will be archived but not published.

Database Launch — Timeline TBD pending metadata enrichment and platform selection, but our goal is to launch by the end of 2027.

Archiving is ongoing work. The database will never be "finished" – it will continue to be enriched, expanded, and refined as new connections emerge and the cultural moment around these artists evolves. The goal is not perfection, but accessibility: ensuring that Veryl Oakland's three decades of documentation remains available, searchable, and relevant for generations to come.
