"I took this while on assignment for Swing Journal, Japan. Inside the rehearsal room at Sun Ra's now-historic home at 5626 Morton Street, the space was so packed with recording gear, murals, sculpture, and instruments that there was barely a clear wall to be found. Here he'd paused beside a small carved Horus figure resting on one of the drums, studying it the way he studied everything — with a kind of quiet, searching attention. In that gold and silver headgear, caught mid-thought, he looked every bit the 'advanced state' he so often spoke of that day."
