"I was in New York on assignment for Swing Journal, Japan, covering the Newport in New York Jazz Festival, when I called Sun Ra at his home in Philadelphia about doing a casual shoot. He hopped on the train into the city, and arrived with a satchel full of shawls, capelets, and headgear he'd brought along just for the occasion. We wandered the city, stopping for him to change looks. By the time we got to this shot, he'd pulled the swirl glasses down and had the headphones on with the sequined sunburst peeking out. It was perfect. We wrapped up a few hours later, and I took him to dinner at a Thai restaurant he liked before he checked into a hotel for the night."
