"I caught Chet at his opening night at Keystone Korner in North Beach — and I was floored. It was some of the best playing I'd heard from him in a long time. Perhaps that's the glint in his eye here. For context, twelve years earlier, just across the Bay, Chet Baker had sustained a severe beating connected to his drug addiction, and lost most of his teeth. Many said his career was finished — but as I watched and listened that night, the trumpeter was clearly on top of his game. Chet said he was still dealing with nagging embouchure problems, but was optimistic about his improved playing. After this, he returned to Europe and enjoyed the most prolific era of his career as a recording artist."
