Chet With His Horn

"I really enjoyed this photo session with Chet. Not only was he incredibly photogenic, he was in great spirits that day. About twelve years prior, just across the Bay, he had sustained a severe beating connected to his drug addiction, and lost most of his teeth. Despite many who said his career was finished, the trumpeter had successfully addressed his painful embouchure problems. The night before, he'd opened at Keystone Korner, in North Beach, and I was floored — it was some of the best playing I'd heard from him in a long time. Chet joined me in Ghirardelli Square for the casual shoot, and I could tell that he was ready to get back in the mix and make a complete resurgence of his playing career."
