The Sun Ra Arkestra Lookin Up
"On assignment for Swing Journal, Japan, I caught this in the main rehearsal room at Sun Ra's home at 5626 Morton Street. Whichever Arkestra members happened to be around that day gathered in behind him, and he took his place at the center like it was second nature. I'd been covering him for three summers by then — starting in the Bay Area in 1978, then New York, and finally here, in his own surroundings — and this was the one place that felt most like him: covered wall to wall with murals, instruments, and gear, everything in it as vivid as the man himself."
