Sun Ra's Crumar

"I took this while on assignment for Swing Journal, Japan, inside Sun Ra's now-historic home at 5626 Morton Street in Germantown, Pennsylvania. Once we finished photographing outside and around the house, he opened up the movable divider closest, went around, and sat down at his Crumar organ — the same instrument that anchored the front of that packed rehearsal room, surrounded by his own murals and painted panels. He didn't need to be asked. He just settled in behind it, hands on the keys, and looked straight into the camera like he'd been waiting there all along."
