Sun Ra’s Sunburst
"I was in New York on assignment for Swing Journal, Japan, covering the Newport in New York Jazz Festival, when I called Sun Ra at his home in Philadelphia about doing a casual shoot. He wanted to come into the city, and when I picked him up at Penn Station he had a satchel full of shawls, capelets, and headgear he'd brought along just for the occasion. We had no plan for where to go — we just walked, stopping wherever the high-rises or the light looked right, while he decided what to wear and how he wanted to be seen."
