Sun Ra & the Red Sun

"On assignment for Swing Journal, Japan, I took this outside Sun Ra's now-historic home at 5626 Morton Street in Germantown, Pennsylvania, on the residential block where he and the Arkestra lived and rehearsed together. By this point in our session he'd already gone through several changes of his cosmic threads and headgear — five in all that day — vanishing and reappearing in something new each time, though I never once saw where he kept it all. Here he'd chosen a cape with a sun emblem stitched across the chest, standing beneath the trees on that quiet street, and for a moment the neighborhood around him looked almost incidental to the man himself."
