Appearance-wise, while wearing a long overcoat and cap on this brisk night, Monk looked every bit the mysterious figure people made him out to be. Initially, his unorthodox melodies caught me a little off-guard, but they were anchored with a solid blues feel. Suddenly, the quartet brought that infectious swing and everything started to fit. I became a Monk devotee that very night."
